The dulcimer originated centuries ago and it is believed that the name came from the Greek worde "dulce" meaning "sweet" and "melos", a Latin word which means "song".

The instrument was found in many European cultures in various forms.

Towards the end of the 18th centurty, the dulcimer found its way to American Appalachia where it has enjoyed immense popularity ever since..

The dulcimer is fun to own, easy to play and with proper care will last a lifetime.  It is the perfect instrument for the beginner or any musician that just loves its unique sound.

Tuning the dulcimer:

Tune the first thin string to any pleasant sounding pitch (C works well).  Next tune the second and third strings to the same pitch.  The fourth string is the bass string:  it should be tuned so that when you depress the string at the fourth fret, the pitch matches that of the other three strings.  Your dulcimer is now in tune and ready to play! 

The dulcimer can be tuned to play in any key, just choose the pitch you want and follow the instructions above.
